Deuteronomy 7… Destroy the Canaanites….

A study in Deuteronomy 7: beginning with verse 2-… destroy them totally… from the Hebrew root word for ” devote”… meaning here…” to devote to destruction to exterminate”… sounds pretty harsh but there is a reason….

The Canaanites… the most morally corrupt people of that time and haters of God… (7:10)….. deserved to die for their sins (9:5)….

Chapter 7 verse 3 and 4: marriage to a heathen would almost inevitably result in worshiping the Heathen’s  gods… (cf. Mal. 2-11)

Chapter 7 verse 5: stones…..Asherah poles… we’re sociated with Baal worship, and asherah poles…. images of Asherah, the mother of 70 gods, including Baal….

Chapter 7 verses 6 through 11…. God’s Sovereign choice of Israel was not based on the size of the nation ( Abraham received the promise while still childless and Jacobs immediate family consisted of only 70 individuals)… but stem from his love and from faithfulness to his COVENANT  purpose for them….HOLY….. separate from all around them…. and to the Lord for HIS  use… LOVE… (vs.9)…. See note on Hosea.2:19….

Chapter 7 verses 12 through 13….. enjoyment of the blessings of God’s UNCONDITIONAL  relationship to his people… was conditioned on their obedience..

Chapter 7 verse 15…. the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt: these included…ophthalmia…. dysentery…. smallpox and elephantitis….

Chapter 7 verse 20: The Hornet…. could be actual Hornets…OR…. the Egyptian Army….See note on Exodus 23:28….

Chapter 7 verse 22….. the conquest of Canaan would be Progressive so that there would not be an excessive accumulation of corpses and desolate land to attract dangerous animals….

Chapter 7 verse 26….Achan… disobeyed this admonition….( Joshua 7 verse 1)….

A key an often overlooked word in God’s Covenants and sometimes scripture in general is the word….IF….. example: God says if you will do thus and so… I will do thus and so…. though  God…. through Abraham… God had his chosen people…. they had God’s promises through His Covenants… though God’s promises were unconditional …(and there seems to be a contradiction) …through a condition of obedience… you have to have some deep understanding for this:

Correct me if I’m wrong… but I believe this… God is going to follow through no matter what…. that might involve a lot of pain… if his people were and are disobedient…. his promises are unconditional …what we receive is conditional… if they turn their backs on him… which they often did …and which we often do …there had and has to be a correction ….which often times involves punishment and even death….

Further understanding revolves around the fact that God is basically a two-sided coin…. he can be love…. or he can be a judgemental all consuming fire…. a lot of people will say how can a loving God do this…..? because he is the author of life…. the lord giveth and the lord taketh away…. don’t bring him down to your level ascend to his….. don’t worship the creation …worship the Creator… somehow we have to get back to respecting God … if we can get back to viewing Life as a gift.. it could change everything for the better…. yes he has given us free will but if you want to be a destructive force or any ideology wants to be a destructive Force…. those doing these things ….might do so for a while but trust me Judgement Day is coming… I didn’t say it…. God did
