Hi, my name is Melvin. I am five years old. I am black, and my mouth talks slow, but my heart is gold. My mama is teaching me that having a gold heart is good, she says it has a lot to do with the character of a person. She often speaks of an important man that lived a while ago, a black man, and his name is Martin Luther King. He talked a lot about character. Mama says that he kept it pretty simple, he says that we shouldn’t judge people by the color of their skin, but the character of their heart. I believe mama is right. Now, that we’ve gotten to know each other a little bit, I want to talk about Rubbers, some folks call them Dickerson’s, and some call them galoshes. I prefer to say Rubbers. My momma bought me a nice bright yellow pair. They are very comfortable and they come up to just below my knee. So I can go skipping along and jumping in puddles and my feet don’t get wet. Goodbye, I hear my mama calling, see you later, I hope.
