Let me rephrase that, sometimes we have to take a closer look at God’s Word and the centuries-long interpretations and traditions of men.
Two young men both working on their Ph.D.’s met in church one Sunday. Before the sermon one of the young men passes a note to the other. The note instructed the recipient to look at a particular scripture very closely. The scripture is Psalm 82. Both men were very knowledgeable in Hebrew Grammar. Here is Psalm 82: God (elohim) stands in the divine assembly; he administers judgment amid the gods ( elohim) The word elohim occurs twice in this short verse. The young man that received the note from his friend said upon reading this, that his heart was in his throat, and he didn’t know how he could miss what was coming as a revelation. Translating the first use of the word elohim was singular and worked fine. However, the second use of the word needed to be translated as plural. The revelation came to the young man: The God of the Old Testament was part of an assembly–A pantheon — of other gods. The young man, being the student of Hebrew grammar could not quite figure out how he had missed this. He had taught Hebrew grammar for five years. The young man knew That the God of Israel is not part of a group of idols. This was the Bible, not Greek mythology.
Note: At this point, I would like to say I am somewhat simplifying a scholarly work done by Michael Heiser in his most excellent book — THE UNSEEN REALM. I will be tying Psalm 82 together with scripture concerning the Tower of Babel, and what ( that is often overlooked) took place there. This is all done to understand what happened in the ancient days and how it affects what is happening now in our troubled world.
The young man began to searching for answers. He discovered that the ground he was exploring was a place where evangelicals had feared to tread. The explanations he found from scholars were disturbingly weak; mostly maintaining that the gods (Elohim) were just men Jewish elders, or that the verse was about the Trinity. He knew neither of those could be correct. Psalm 82 states that the gods were being condemned as corrupt in their administration of the nations of the earth.
OK, stop right there — God was talking to and correcting lesser gods or elohim about how they were handling the nations of the earth, that they had been assigned to. This brings us to what happened at the Tower of Babel.
Read Genesis 11: 1thru 9. Read Deuteronomy 32: 8-9. I’m asking you to do this on your own because if I don’t ask you to, this is going to be be an extremely long post, and I don’t want it to be.
So I will summarize for the sake of this post. God came down from heaven, and was very disappointed with what mankind was trying to do in building a stairway to heaven. He basically said that if they could do this, they could do anything, so he decided to confuse the languages. But much more happened here.
IE: Deuteronomy 32:8-9. When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. But the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.THIS IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT! Deuteronomy 32 describes how YHWH dispersed the nations at Babel and this resulted in his disinheriting those nations as a people. Compare with Romans 1:18-25, a familiar passage where God gave humankind over to their persistent rebellion.
So where do we land with this? Let’s go back to Psalm 82. God (elohim) was chastising the lower elohim for not doing a good job in managing the disinherited nations. PLEASE GET THIS!
Let’s fast forward to today and take a look at the chaos, death, and destruction, as most of the world is aligned against Israel and the U.S. including mainly modern-day China and Russia. If we study history we will find that Israel has always been and currently is threatened by its neighboring nations, THOSE THAT GOD HAS DISINHERITED, remember Israel is his allotted portion. The struggle between good and evil, between Israel and the rest of the world continues and will culminate soon.The culmination will come in ‘The Tribulation’ and the appearance of Satan to control the GLOBAL NWO. There will be three and one-half years of peace and then everything goes sideways, followed by three and one-half years of war. ( It will be shortened, however.) I hope this study helps all seeking to understand this history and how it leads to the bigger picture of our troubles today. Frankie The Earthman.
