SOME SCIENTISTS got together and designed a computer simulation. The computer simulated traveling at the speed of light for billions of years out into the universe. It was pretty amazing the picture that was developed by the computer. With all the galaxys and everything that’s in outer space, it looked as if a “tapestry” was hanging there.
I mention this recollection of a story I read long ago. As I lay in bed trying to go to sleep when this night it all came rushing back to me.
Isaiah 34:4 — All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and the heavens rolled up like a scroll, All the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree. NIV
Cross Reference: 2nd Peter 3:10 — THE DAY OF THE LORD. Matthew 24:29, Mark 13:25.
Context: God’s Judgment on the Nations. The restrain will be left unburied in the stench of their corpses will rise; The mountains will flow with their blood. (God speaking by the way) When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens then it will come down upon Edom the people I have devoted to destruction.
First thought: Do you find it kind of peculiar that God “devotes certain people to destruction?” My thinking is that these are people that are probably ‘reprobate’ or have not trusted in God, His son, or His plan. These scriptures reference the Day of the Lord, in the last days.
One of the most fascinating sentences in Isaiah 34:4 is the reference to God ‘rolling up the universe like a scroll.’ To me this indicates that that the ‘one true God’ YHWH is so far above and outside of his creation ( yet can enter it) that He could literally roll it up like a scroll and put it in his pocket. That’s my interpretation anyway, and a good one.
Now that is power. We chirp and peep and yammer down here on this earth trying to rise to the level of God with our weak philosophical studies and our self-serving righteousness. We cannot begin to know this wonderful God, not in this lifetime anyway. The best example of His true character is looking upon what He did through his Son’s sacrificial death on the cross. If you want to know Him really, there he is.
